Ontario is investing in 48 community projects across the province that are supporting new ways to help people break the cycle of poverty, increase food security, find good jobs and end homelessness in Ontario. Local MPP Jeff Leal was at the YWCA Peterborough Haliburton today to learn more about the work being done since the group received a $397,900 Local Poverty Reduction Fund grant from the Government of Ontario for its Nourish and JustFood programs.
The grant is funded by the Government of Ontario and administered by its agency the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and is focused on helping families facing food insecurity as a solution for poverty reduction. The data collected will contribute to a body of knowledge that will support poverty reduction programs across the province.
This investment by the Government of Ontario is just one way the province is bolstering innovative local programs that support groups disproportionately affected by poverty. Through the Local Poverty Reduction Fund, Ontario is helping to break the cycle of poverty for children and youth, increase employment and income security, and end homelessness in Ontario.
Fighting poverty is part of the plan to create jobs, grow the economy, and help people in their everyday lives.
“Ontario is investing in programs that will measurably improve the lives of those most affected by poverty. Harnessing the creativity of local partners like YWCA Peterborough Haliburton helps us identify community-driven solutions that can inform future policy, lead to more strategic investments, and result in better outcomes for people in poverty.”
–– Peter Milczyn, Minister of Housing, Minister Responsible for the Poverty Reduction Strategy
“With this funding, the YWCA will be able to help us learn more about what approaches are making a difference in our community. This will help government, communities and all of our partners design and deliver more effective programs to combat poverty using proven approaches as we continue making Ontario the best place to call home.”
–– Jeff Leal, MPP
“We are delighted to be working with the Local Poverty Reduction Fund to implement and evaluate our two community-focused food security programs, Nourish and JustFood. Without the support of LPRF and other funders and partners, these programs would not exist. We believe strongly in their ability to reduce poverty in our community by increasing food security, building food skills and enhancing belonging. We look forward to evaluating this belief rigorously as part of this process.”
–– Lynn Zimmer, Executive Director, YWCA Peterborough Haliburton
